Time For A Change
And A Fond Farewell!
Written by Dr. Steve Belton
Tuesday, 03 February 2009

Dear Friends,

After twenty-one years in private practice it is time for me to make a change. I am closing my private ob-gyn practice on April 2, 2009. In the process I will be saying good-bye to my many friends and acquaintances - patients, staff, coworkers and colleagues - and will embark upon a new adventure and journey.

Naturally, I am in many ways sad about this change, but this career change will allow me to pursue international medical mission trips with greater frequency, and this is something I've long felt was the way I should spend the latter years of my medical practice career. To accomplish this I have accepted a position at an east bay hospital at which I will join a team of ob-gyns who provide medical care for the indigent of that community. It is the flexibility in that position's scheduling that will allow me to take several overseas trips each year.

I count it a great privilege to have been part of your care team these past years. You have enriched my life beyond measure. Mine is a great specialty which I feel blessed to have practiced for these twenty-plus years. I started my practice in 1988 and have had the privilege of caring for many of you for most or all of those years. We have gone through many life events together and I thank you for allowing me to enter into your world in those times. Many of you also helped me and my family walk through the very difficult loss of my daughter Missy in 1999 and I thank you for each and every one of your cards, letters and prayers.

But now it is time for me to move on to another area of medicine that is calling. International medicine will give me the opportunity to share with doctors and nurses in faraway places the knowledge and experience I have acquired in a way that will increase and multiply my gifts far beyond anything I could ever accomplish by myself in direct patient care. Also, the individuals we serve on these trips are often poor, displaced, unloved and ignored, and my participation on these teams will allow me to bring a special and meaningful touch to these individuals.

If you are so inclined I would appreciate your prayers and good thoughts. I will long remember my years on Samaritan Drive with fondness, a smile on my face, and tears of joy and compassion in my eyes...

Farewell Part 2

To My Current Patients
Written by Dr. Steve Belton

One reason that I feel able to do this at this time is that a doctor that I know and trust and with whom I've worked for the last fifteen years, Dr. Gordon Rosenberg, has agreed to take over your care. I think the world of him and we have spent enough time together - in labor and delivery and in surgery - for me to know that he is a trustworthy, competent, and caring doctor. I can attest to his great surgical skills and instincts as well as his overall excellent clinical judgment both in gynecology and obstetrics. He is very well respected in our department by other physicians as well as by our nursing colleagues and I can assure you I would not refer my own daughters (which I have done) to someone I did not truly trust and respect! So I have complete confidence that you will be well taken care of obstetrically or gynecologically.

However, there is more to medical care than technical expertise and knowledge and that is the empathy and compassion with which we approach patient care. You have become used to a certain level of this extra sense of being cared for in my office that is unfortunately not the norm anymore. However, Dr. Rosenberg and his staff also know about, care about, and work very hard in this area as well. You should feel the same level of caring with his office as you have experienced in mine. He and his staff are responsive to patients and their needs.

Dr. Rosenberg has trained at Stanford and in New York and has practiced ob-gyn in San Jose since 1989. He is well respected by colleagues for his knowledge and surgical skill and has served our Ob-Gyn Department as head of the peer review committee for many years. He is married, has two grown children, and lives in the Los Gatos area.
